“So did you, boss? Make any progress last night?”

Brady nodded. “I walked up to the graveyard at midnight. Told Turnbull I was coming for him.”

Frankie stared at him. Shook her head. “That’s not a rational thing to do, Mike. Prowling the streets in the dark. That’s not normal. ‘Feral’ is probably the word we’re looking for.”

Frankie turned to go. Stopped. Changed her mind. “Are you alright, boss?”

“I’m fine, Frankie. Why?”

“I thought I saw you limping when you were getting a coffee. And you’re wincing.”

Brady flexed his right knee under the desk. Struggled to keep his expression neutral. “I’m fine, Frankie. Never better. I’m going to walk round and see Sadie Turnbull.”

“So it’s not the warrant?”

Brady shook his head. “No. Like I said yesterday, I’ll talk to her. Even if it costs me another pair of earrings.”

“Have you got five minutes before you go?”

“Sure. Of course I have. Nothing wrong is there?”

“You weren’t the only one awake last night. There’s something I want to show you.”

Is this what she was going to say the other day?

‘Nothing to do with the job. It’s fine, Mike. Like you say, I’ll do some paperwork.’

Has Frankie got some problems? ‘Something I want to show you?’ She’s had a job offer. She’s leaving…
